The Top Ten Best Christmas & NY Things To Do In the Tropics

Gather round the fairy lit palm trees, girls and boys – it really is the most wonderful time of the year! At Christmas, you’re at least eleventy million times happier, and here in the tropics there’s the added (*ahem*) warmer-than-usual spring in your step as you crack open another cold one, poolside. Aside from being able to listen to Christmas carols WHENEVER YOU WANT (take that, Grinch), the bestest thing about Christmas is the tropics is the relaxed ‘tude that goes hand in hand with the holiday all care and no responsibilities!

So, dust off those decorations and snack on those advent calendar treats - it’s time to get your Christmas cheer on and bust out that mango branch (who even needs mistletoe?). Here’s your guide to a jolly festive season in the tropical northern sunshine.

1. Douglas Shire Christmas Carols

Embrace the magic of Christmas with the Douglas Shire Christmas Carols on 15th December at the Mossman Showgrounds. With rides and food stalls kicking off from 4PM, the main show starts at 6PM and is hosted by Cairns Triple M. As well as a lolly drop, a visit from the Big Man in Red himself and carol classics from the Douglas Shire Christmas Choi, there’s also a very special Christmas performance by kids’ entertainers, Dougie 5.

2. Photos with Santa

Hopping onto St Nick’s knee to ask for presents is a tradition that’s been around since our parents were kids, and will likely keep going until the end of time. Dust off that novelty Christmas jumper or t-shirt, get your Christmas list sorted and head to the Clink Theatre on December 16th from 10am to whisper all your Christmas wishes to Santa, with a keepsake photo to match.

3. Have a white Christmas

Who needs white snow when you’ve got white sandy beaches? Four Mile Beach is one of Australia’s most beautiful beaches and offers a perfect setting for relaxing under a palm tree or playing a game of beach cricket with the family. Build your very own ‘sand-man’ and peel another prawn in tropical paradise..

4. Prawns off the Back of the Trawler

If milkshakes bring all the boys to the yard then Santiago’s prawns brings just about everyone to the Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina. With the trawler brimming with crustacean delights from their recent catch, it simply doesn’t get any fresher than right off the boat! When Santiago is due for mooring, you’ll notice handmade signs around town boasting the finest catches. Best to get in early at the Marina - they sell out fast.

5. Swap your Santa Suit for a Wetsuit

What better place to spend Christmas Day that out on one of the world’s Natural Wonders, the Great Barrier Reef. Make your Christmas a talking point by popping on a wetsuit to play hide and seek with Nemo, go coral spotting on the outer reef and marvel in the beauty of the Tropical North’s backyard. Check out Calypso and Aquarius for more info on sailing times.

6. Secret Santa Shopping Spree

Make your Christmas shopping more amble than rush. In the few hundred meters on the main street, you can discover a shopping utopia with everything from recognised brands, high street clothing and unique homewares through to jewellery, books and bespoke art. With Sugar, Lemonade & Sparkles, Whileaway Bookstore, Ahoy Trader, Perrin Clarke Photography… the list in endless. Your credit card can thank us later (or not).

7. Pina Coladas and A Walk in the Rain

Wet season never stopped anyone! The upside of Christmas in tropical summer is that when it rains, it’s cool. You know what else is cool? Those bartenders whipping up yuletide cocktails at favourite haunts Jimmy Rums and Barbados. If you’re not allergic to rain, take a old-movie-inspired walk in the rain between the two bars (and all the others in between), taste testing those grown up tropical punches along the way.

10. Poolside Yuletide

If all you want for Christmas is a really good tan (over baked ham), perhaps a champagne breakfast followed by lazing by the pool is more your speed? Occasionally move to turn the pages of that romance novel you only ever read on holidays and to refill your glass. That’s how we do it.

Whatever your preference this Christmas in paradise, we wish you a safe and relaxing holiday season. Bottoms up!
