WATERGATE port douglas
Watergate Restaurant and Lounge Bar - as the name suggests - is a pleasant combination of a stylish restaurant and an intimate lounge bar.
The restaurant offers a combination of indoor and outdoor dining decks, with the lounge bar the perfect spot to start or end a salubrious evening.
The cocktail list is an impressive selection of classics and twists, reflecting the kitchen ethos of local where possible and best every time. The Mangelico – muddled mango, lime & coconut healthily laced with gold rum, Frangelico and Malibu - is loin-tinglingly good, while the Lady Marmalade – saffron infused gin with marmalade, balsamic, bitter orange liquor and orange juice – will have you busting out your very best Baz Luhrman, Parisian-salon inspired dance moves in no time.
Wines range from quaffable to baller status, designed to sit deliciously alongside the modern Australian Asian influenced menu that genuinely focuses on authentic local produce.
At Watergate you can expect to see fresh seafood straight off the local fishing boats right through to the Atherton Tableland’s best fruit and vegetables.
Executive Chef Dale Burrows takes full advantage of the abundance of locally grown herbs as well as a wide selection of regionally sourced artisan cheeses.
In the Lounge Bar, tasting plates are a great way to start the snacking at Watergate – the twice cooked pork belly and the crocodile spring rolls are staple favourites, and understandably so.
For mains, kangaroo and local reef fish are menu staples as well as the eye fillet being a mic-droppingly good standout.
Testament to Watergate’s longevity is definitely its team - both kitchen and waitstaff are extraordinary. Service is upbeat and friendly, and the motto at Watergate appears to be ‘water always full, wine never empty’ – priority is put on attentiveness here, and it shows.
Staff are genuinely welcoming here, and their warmth feels like a true thing rather than merely a facade put on as part of the job.
With nothing ever seeming to be too much trouble, it’s no wonder Watergate was recently named as one of Australia’s best fine dining restaurants. True to their form, however, it’s best you don’t mention that – their modesty prefers to be considered casual.
Open every day from 12 Midday, Watergate is the perfect representation of what Port Douglas is all about – achingly cool, yet charmingly oblivious to it’s popularity.
